The St. Regis pours afternoon tea in Astor Court under a painted sky, in the Fifth Avenue hotel that John Jacob Astor built in 1904 and that gave the world the Bloody Mary in the King Cole Bar next door.
John Jacob Astor IV built the St. Regis in 1904 as the finest hotel in New York, and its Beaux-Arts lobby, the King Cole Bar with its Maxfield Parrish mural and the Astor Court tea room still carry the Gilded Age. Tea in Astor Court is served under a trompe-l’œil sky with a harpist, a classic tier of sandwiches, scones and French pastries and a menu of St. Regis teas; the pastry kitchen supplies the hotel’s butler service and its Fifth Avenue neighbours in kind.
Astor Court is the calm tea of Midtown: fewer photographs, more conversation, the Bloody Mary afterwards.
