Tea in the park
The Baur au Lac has been owned by the same family since 1844 and serves tea and pastry in the Pavillon and on the terrace of its own park by the lake: Zurich’s grand old afternoon.
Johannes Baur opened the hotel by the lake in 1844, and his descendants still own it: a rare thing among grand hotels. The house has a park with a canal, the Pavillon restaurant in a glass room in the garden, and a pastry kitchen that serves the Zurich classics and the French repertoire with equal seriousness. Afternoon tea and pastry are served in the Pavillon and, in summer, on the terrace among the trees; the hotel’s own confiserie pieces and chocolates are sold in the lobby.
The Baur au Lac is quiet money: no spectacle, precise service, a Luxemburgerli-sized pastry that is exactly right. It is a ten-minute walk from Sprüngli and the Bahnhofstrasse confiseries.
