Deià in the afternoon
La Residencia in Deià, two manor houses above the sea in the Tramuntana, serves an afternoon of island sweets on terraces where the artists of the village have sat since the 1980s.
The hotel was built out of two sixteenth-century manor houses in the village of Deià, where Robert Graves lived and the painters of Mallorca still do. Since 1984 it has been the island’s most famous retreat: olive groves, a sculpture garden, terraces looking down to the cove. The kitchen serves an afternoon tea on the terrace with Mallorcan sweets, the coca de patata of Valldemossa, the ensaimada, almond biscuits, beside French pastry, and the restaurant El Olivo closes with the island’s almond and citrus desserts.
The merienda hour on the terrace, between five and seven with the light on the mountains, is the sweet moment of the island.
