Tea over the moat
The Palace Hotel Tokyo looks at the moat and gardens of the Imperial Palace, serves afternoon tea in the Palace Lounge and sells its cakes at Sweets & Deli, the reference hotel counter of the city.
The hotel opposite the Imperial Palace gardens was rebuilt in 2012 and reopened as the most Japanese of Tokyo’s grand hotels: quiet, exact, with balconies over the moat and swans. Its pastry kitchen is a Tokyo institution in its own right: the Palace Lounge serves an afternoon tea with a seasonal theme and a view of the water, and Sweets & Deli on the basement level sells the hotel’s cakes, breads and chocolates to a queue of office workers and connoisseurs. The Marunouchi rectangular cake and the seasonal strawberry shortcake are the pieces the city knows.
The counter is the reason to come even without a tea booking: a palace kitchen, Japanese precision, prices below Paris and a box that survives the Metro.
