The Palm Court of the Plaza has served afternoon tea under its stained-glass ceiling since 1907: palms, gilded columns, a tea sommelier and the New York ritual, with tax and gratuity on top.
The room is the centre of the hotel, restored with its glass laylight, palms and marble; the tea comes on a stand with sandwiches, scones, a pastry tier and a tea list guided by a sommelier, with a children’s tea for the Eloise pilgrims. Prices are quoted before tax and gratuity; expect a third more on the bill.
It is a New York ritual rather than a pastry pilgrimage: the room is the reason, and it is worth it.
