Under the Eiffel dome
The Hermitage is the quieter SBM palace: a winter garden with a glass dome by Gustave Eiffel, a terrace above the harbour and a pastry service in the Crystal Bar that Monégasques prefer to the casino square.
The Hermitage opened in 1896 as the romantic sister of the Hôtel de Paris: a pink Belle Époque façade on a quiet square, a winter garden whose glass cupola was built by Eiffel’s workshops, and the Salle Belle Époque with its frescoes. The pastry of the SBM kitchens is served in the Crystal Bar and on the terrace above the port, where the light is better than on the casino square and the tables are easier to find. In summer the terrace runs a full afternoon service with tarts, ice creams and the coast’s citrus desserts.
The Hermitage is where the principality itself takes tea: less spectacle, more calm, the same kitchen tradition.
