Stohrer on the rue Montorgueil is the oldest patisserie in Paris, founded in 1730 by the pastry chef of the queen, with painted walls, a baba au rhum that started here and a puits d’amour that has not changed in two centuries.
Nicolas Stohrer followed Marie Leszczyńska from Poland to Versailles and opened his shop on the rue Montorgueil in 1730. The interior, painted by a pupil of the decorator of the Opéra, is listed; the counter sells the baba au rhum, the puits d’amour with its caramelised custard, the religieuse, the éclair, savoury tarts and the classics of the French repertoire, made the way they always were.
It is the historical stop of any Paris sweet day, and the baba is the piece.
