Café Luitpold
Under the glass dome
Café Luitpold on the Brienner Strasse, founded in 1888 and named for the Prince Regent, slices the Prinzregententorte under a glass-domed palm garden, with a Konditorei counter and a small museum of the café’s history.
The café was Munich’s grandest in the Prinzregent’s era and was rebuilt after the war around its palm garden, a glass-roofed courtyard with palms, marble and light. The Konditorei counter sells the Prinzregententorte, the house’s own cakes, pralines and the Bavarian classics; the café serves them with coffee, and a small exhibition upstairs tells the story. The bar next door is a Munich institution of its own.
