Fortnum & Mason on Piccadilly runs a proper patisserie counter above its famous tea hall: scones, tarts, the Fortnum’s cakes and a tea-and-cake salon facing the Ritz across the street.
The grocer that invented the Scotch egg and supplied the Empire with tea has a pastry kitchen of its own: the patisserie counter sells scones, tarts, éclairs, layered cakes and the seasonal collections, and the Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon upstairs serves a full afternoon tea for those who did not book the Ritz opposite. The ground floor sells the biscuits, the teas and the hampers.
It is the practical sweet stop of Piccadilly and the tea salon is easier than any palace.
